Stephen and Puig to continue to R2

Sloane Stephens fought for two hours to stay alive in the Mexican Tennis Open. Stephens eliminated her compatriot Louisa Chirico 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. Stephens is the second seed of the tournament and will be measured with the Belarusian Olga Govortsova during the second round.

Also advancing to the second phase Puerto Rican Monica Puig, who defeated American Samantha Crawford 6-4, 6-4. It was only the second duel between them; Monica previously won the Indian Wells in 2013.
